The “Step into Quantum” summer program is a brand-new program offered by the Stewart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute at the University of British Columbia (UBC). This program will take a comprehensive approach to understanding quantum mechanics, quantum technologies, and the future of quantum innovation. Learn about the global quantum industry and explore your own academic or career intersections with the expanding scope of quantum technologies. Throughout the program, you will get to explore and enjoy Vancouver BC in its most beautiful season. Focused on demystifying quantum, building meaningful connections, and supporting future-thinkers, this program will prepare you for a new era.
What you might expect/course format
This course will be an exciting mixture of lectures and hands-on project work, giving learners a chance to build from quantum fundamentals into the application of those mechanics in different technologies. We will explore multiple types of quantum computers, materials, and other technologies both conceptually and with lab-like activities. Learners will also consider the hidden quantum mechanics in everyday objects to help contextualize the intrinsic nature of quantum. None of the topics will be covered in a vacuum: direct connection to and application in other industries will be woven throughout the modules to highlight the benefits brought to a wide range of professionals.
June 2026 Course Packages
Step Into Quantum: Micro Credential 1
Step into Quantum: Micro Credential 1 will introduce quantum mechanics, discuss quantum technologies, and help to position students to consider the quantum industry. The integration of quantum science into a variety of other fields will be explored. Through a mixture of lectures, group activities, and coding labs, students will build their foundational understanding of quantum science and its applications in both current and future technologies. This course does not require a significant technical background, and introduction to python will be included for students without coding experience. However, coding experience would be an asset for students.
Step Into Quantum: Micro Credential 2
Step into Quantum: Micro Credential 2 will be a combination of seminars and group work, focused on the application of quantum into their fields of focus. Building on the knowledge from MC1, students will conduct a case study on either a quantum research facility or a quantum company. They will also build a roadmap for continued engagement in quantum, either through further work or education. The combination of these two projects will serve as the basis for groups to create a pitch project for adopting or innovating quantum technology into an existing company or field.
Prerequisite: No specific undergraduate degree preference. High school physics and calculus required to follow material.
